Sudha Murthy (also spelled Murty , born on August 19, 1950 in Kulkarni ) is an Indian engineer, teacher, philanthropist and writer in Kannada and English.

Life

Murthy began her professional career as a computer scientist and engineer . She chairs the Infosys Foundation and is a member of the Gates Foundation's public health initiatives . She founded several orphanages , participated in rural development , supported the movement to equip all state schools in Karnataka with computer and library facilities, and founded the Murthy Classical Library of India at Harvard University . Murthy took a bold move to introduce computer and library facilities in all schools in Karnataka and taught computer science . It was in 1995 by the Rotary Club in Bangalore awarded the "Best Teacher Award". Murthy is best known for her social work and contribution to Kannada and English literature. Dollar Bahu (German: Dollar daughter-in-law), a novel originally written by her in Kannada and later translated into English as Dollar Bahu, was adapted as a television series by Zee TV in 2001 . Murthy has also starred in the Marathi film Pitruroon and the Kannada film Prarthana.

Early life and education

Sudha Murthy was born into a Madhwa family on August 19, 1950 in Shiggaon, Karnataka, India, to the surgeon RH Kulkarni and his wife Vimala Kulkarni. She and her siblings were raised by their parents and maternal grandparents. These childhood experiences form the historical basis for her first notable work, entitled How I Taught My Grandmother To Read & Other Stories .

Murthy studied engineering at the BVB College of Engineering & Technology. Murthy also graduated from the Indian Institute of Science with a master's degree in computer engineering .

Career

Murthy became the first female engineer to be hired by India's largest automobile manufacturer, TATA Engineering and Locomotive Company (TELCO). Murthy joined the company as a development engineer in Pune and then also worked in Mumbai & Jamshedpur . Murthy had written a postcard to the company's CEO complaining about the male culture at TELCO. As a result, she received an interview and was immediately hired. She later moved to Pune as a senior systems analyst at Walchand Group of Industries.

In 1996 she founded the Infosys Foundation. To date she is a trustee of the Infosys Foundation and visiting professor at the PG Center at Bangalore University. She also taught at Christ University. She has written and published many books, including two travelogues, two specialist books, six novels, and three textbooks.

Private life

Sudha Murthy married NR Narayana Murthy while working as an engineer at TELCO in Pune. The couple have a son and a daughter.
