Exterior
The Suffolk Punch has a strong neck arch, strong shoulders, a short strong back, wide hip bones and a high tail. The legs appear short. It reaches an average height of 170 cm. Specimens up to 175 cm occur occasionally. The coat color is always brown and varies from a light golden brown to dark brown. There are white sprinkles and markings, but far less than in other comparable breeds. The Suffolk Punch horse type existed as early as the 16th century. The modern lineage dates back to the second half of the 18th century when the breed took the form we know it today. It has a beautiful, large, often slightly ramsnose head with alert eyes, a broad forehead and fine ears. The neck is powerful and massive, merging into a slightly pronounced withers. The trunk is barrel-shaped with a long back and a muscular croup. The sturdy legs are short and stocky, the hindquarters have enormous strength.
interior
The Suffolk Punch is a strong, capable horse that has extraordinary pulling power and is also extremely durable.
Breeding history
It was bred mainly in the east of England in Norfolk and Suffolk for work in agriculture. The cold-blooded Suffolk Punch horses were repeatedly refined with Norfolk trotters, cobs and English thoroughbreds in the course of the 18th century . The result was a strong, high-performance horse that has extraordinary pulling power and is also extremely durable. All Suffolk Punch still alive today go back to the stallion Crips's Horse , who was born in 1768. In 1877 the so-called Suffolk Horse Society was founded.
