The Sugarloaf Key Bat Tower is a historic site on Sugarloaf Key , Monroe County , Florida . It is located one mile northwest of US Highway 1 or the Overseas Highway at MM 17. On May 13, 1982, the tower was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a monument .
history
The tower was built in 1929 by Judge Clyde Perky. The plans for the tower come from Dr. Charles Campbell of Texas, an early pioneer of bat studies. The bat roost should be a shelter for mosquito-consuming bats, which in turn brought in the malaria . Of the 14 Campbell Bat Tower originally built around the world , two more exist in the USA: The Perky Tower in Comfort and the Shangri-La Gardens in Orange , both in Texas. One of the towers was reconstructed so that today bats actually nest there. A fourth Campbell Bat Tower in Temple Terrace , Florida burned down in 1979 and is currently being rebuilt.
