Comfort is a city in Kendall County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located at the junction of Highways 27 and 87 and Interstate 10 in the center of the county, in south-central Texas, about 75 km northwest of San Antonio and has a total area of 8.3 km² without any significant water surface.
history
The town was founded in 1854 by the German immigrant Ernst Hermann Altgelt and a group of German immigrants from New Braunfels who had settled on the banks of Cypress Creek at the confluence with the Guadalupe River since 1852 .
The Loyalty of the Union Monument , erected in 1866, commemorates the massacre on the Nueces River , in which the Confederate States Army killed Texan conscientious objectors of German origin who wanted to flee to Mexico .
Demographic data
According to the 2000 census, 2,358 people in 799 households and 603 families lived here. The population density was 283.6 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 76.34% White, 0.51% African American, 1.19% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.21% Pacific Islander, and 18.70% other ethnic groups. About 2.93% were mixed race and 45.00% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 799 households, 38.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.7% of these were married couples living together. 11.5% were single mothers and 24.5% were non-families. 20.5% of all households were single households and 9.3% had people living there who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.82 and the average family size was 3.26.
29.3% of the population were under 18 years old, 10.7% 18 to 24, 25.5% 25 to 44, 20.1% 45 to 64, and 14.3% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 94.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 89.5 men.
The median income for a household in the 28,799 USD , and the median income for a family 29,295 USD. Males had a median income of $ 20,972 versus $ 15,000 for women. The per capita income was $ 12,687. 29.0% of the population and 27.1% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 39.2% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 3.3% were 65 or older.
