geography

The village lies on the edge of the Grosse Moos and at the foot of the Wistenlacherberg on both sides of the Broye Canal , which has served as a straightened river bed for the Broye since the correction of the waters of the Jura between 1878 and 1882.

history

The Sugiez area was already settled in pre-Roman times. Traces from the Neolithic period and the Bronze Age have been found. Six bridges and three harbors have been identified for Roman times. Sugiez is mentioned for the first time in a document in 1162 under the name Solzie . For the year 1339 the place name Suaniez is secured. In the middle of the 13th century, a tower, the Tour de la Broye , was built in Sugiez, probably to monitor shipping traffic . The village belonged to the rule of Murten until 1484 , which was a common rule of the estates of Bern and Freiburg from 1484 to 1798 . Bern succeeded in introducing the Reformation in the rule , so that Sugiez, which belongs to the parish of Môtier, was reformed along with the Murtenbiet.
