Sugru
Sugru is the brand name of a patented silicone material with a variety of uses, such as gluing , molding, caulking, insulating and cushioning. The name Sugru is derived from the Irish word sugradh , which means to play.
Material properties
In its initial state, the material has the consistency of modeling clay and can be processed like it for 30 minutes. It hardens within 24 hours and then has roughly the consistency of hard rubber , so it is dimensionally stable and elastic . In addition, the cured material is waterproof, temperature-resistant (−50 ° C to +180 ° C), dishwasher-safe, non-toxic and available in several colors. Due to these properties, it is characterized by a large number of possible uses. According to the manufacturer, the storage time of the packaged material is six months, but it can be extended by storing it in a cool place.
The exact composition of the material is kept secret by the manufacturer, but it contains two components that are considered to be potentially allergenic , so it should not get into the hands of children. Sugru is also not resistant to some solvents .
reception
Sugru is marketed by the manufacturers as a material with which a user can improve various everyday things ( hack things better ). It is therefore aimed primarily at private users such as do-it-yourselfers and hobbyists .
Sugru became known through articles in Wired magazine, which is mainly known among geeks and technology freaks, and in the technology blog BoingBoing . Articles about Sugru have now appeared in various major British newspapers and an online community has developed around the material.
In 2010, Sugru was named one of the 50 best inventions of 2010 by American Time magazine .
On June 7, 2018, the inventor received the European Inventor Award in the “Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises” category.
Emergence
The idea for Sugru came from Irish designer Jane Ní Dhulchaointigh. When she was looking for the best modeling material for her work while studying design in London , she discovered that such a material did not exist. In a total of six years of work, together with the two material researchers Ian Moss and Stephen Westall, she developed the material until it was ready for series production and founded the company FormFormForm Ltd. based in London. In May 2018 FormFormForm Ltd. taken over by tesa SE .
