Suh Yongsun

Suh Yongsun , also Yong Sun Suh ( kor. 서용선 ; * 1951 in Seoul ) is a South Korean painter and sculptor . He lives and works mainly near Seoul in Gyeonggi-do .

Life

Suh Yongsun is considered to be one of the most important exponents of South Korea's contemporary art . After retiring from his many years of work as a professor of fine arts at Seoul National University , where he had also studied, he was named "Artist of the Year" by the Museum of Contemporary Art Korea in 2009.

In addition to his work in his own country, he worked in Vermont in the USA in 1995 and was invited to Melbourne several times . In 2001 he also worked as a visiting professor in Hamburg.

His style combines traditional Korean painting style and themes with European positions such as German Expressionism and that of Francis Bacon.

Among the numerous cities that Suh visited on his travels, New York and Berlin in particular had a major influence on his paintings, the subjects of which are often city scenes painted with rough strokes, in which people appear masked.
