The Sulfur Point ( English for sulfur tip ) is a striking and cliff-like headland on the west side of Visokoi Island in the archipelago of the South Sandwich Islands . It is 2.5 km north of Wordie Point .
Scientists from the British Discovery Investigations named it in the course of surveys carried out in 1930 as West Bluff (English for western cliff ). The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee changed this name in 1953 to avoid confusion with the West Bluff of Zavodovski Island . It is named after the sulfur deposits and the hydrogen sulfide gas that escapes here .
