The Sultansazlığı National Park is a nature reserve with a large and rare bird population in Turkey .

Location and nature

The national park is located 70 km southwest of Kayseri in the districts of Develi , Yahyalı and Yeşilhisar . It has an area of ​​24,523 hectares, with the swamp area varying from 8,000 to 13,000 hectares depending on the season. The area is largely covered by reeds and other plants. The salty Yay Lake, which is about 3,650 hectares in size with an average water depth of 1.50 meters, contains the two islands Kızılcıkmadenotu and Bozot and houses red crustaceans , which are the food for the colonies of the greater flamingo .

history

In 1971 the area was placed under protection. In 1988 it was declared a nature reserve and in 1994 it was finally recognized as one of the first five Turkish protected areas within the Ramsar Convention . In 2006 the area was declared a national park .

Bird species
