The Suma ( Russian Су́ма ) is a tributary of the White Sea in the Republic of Karelia in northwestern Russia .

The Suma flows from Lake Melosero in the far east of the Republic of Karelia in a predominantly north-northwest direction to the White Sea and finally flows into Onega Bay . On its way to the sea, it flows through a number of lakes including Schunosero , Chischosero , Pulosero and Sumosero . The river is rich in rapids.

The Suma has a length of 164 km. Its catchment area covers an area of ​​2020 km². The river is mainly fed by the snowmelt . The mean discharge 5.9 km above the mouth is 20 m³ / s. The river usually freezes in November / December and remains ice-covered until the end of April / May.

At least in the past, rafting was carried out on the Suma .
