KK SUMCO ( Japanese 株式会社 SUMCO , kabushiki kaisha samuko ; English SUMCO Corp. ) is a Japanese company that manufactures single crystals and wafers for the semiconductor industry.

history

Today's SUMCO under the name KK Silicon United Manufacturing ( 株式会社シリコンユナイテッドマニュファクチュアリング) in July 1999 by Sumitomo Metal Industries , Mitsubishi Materials established and Mitsubishi Materials Silicon to 300-mm silicon - wafer to develop and produce. In February 2002, it acquired the wafer business from Sumitomo Metal Industries and was merged with Mitsubishi Materials Silicon Corporation, the trade name being changed to Sumitomo Mitsubishi Silicon Corporation. In 2005 the English name was again changed to SUMCO Corporation . Today Mitsubishi Materials holds 18.39% of the shares. A further 18.39% is held by a Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Metal community .

Field of activity

SUMCO supplies the semiconductor industry with single crystal ingots and various wafers ( polished , epitaxial , annealed , SOI ). SUMCO is the world's second largest manufacturer of wafers (after Shin-Etsu and ahead of Wacker Chemie / Siltronic ) and one of the leading manufacturers of 300 mm wafers.

Like all other wafer manufacturers, SUMCO was hit very hard by the collapse in demand in 2008/2009, which was triggered by the general financial and economic crisis. With a turnover of 218 billion yen, only a negative result of −100.5 billion yen could be reported. In 2007 sales were still at a level of 475.0 billion yen with a positive result of 74.9 billion yen.
