The Summerlied is a music and dance festival that takes place every two years in Ohlungen in the Bas-Rhin department in France. It was originally a song festival for Alsatian songs, but over time it has opened up to other genres and cultures from around the world. It is one of the largest music festivals in Alsace: in 2012 almost 20,000 people attended the festival.
history
The first edition took place in 1997, the second two years later. Then the festival was organized every two years from 2000 to 2012.
Stages
The performances are divided into four stages:
- “La Clairière”, or the forest clearing, is the main stage of the festival with 2500 seats. Artists like Hugues Aufray, I Muvrini, Tri Yann and Stephan Eicher played there.
- “La Lisière” (the edge of the forest), with 300 seats, is dedicated to the discovery of young talent or local groups as well as world music.
- on the "Cabaret des Champs" (cabaret stage), 250 seats, cabaret, humor, young artists and lyrical songs are played.
- “La Forêt” (the forest), with gypsy jazz, French and Alsatian chansons, folk music or choirs. There is also dancing on the parquet floor.
Promotion of the local music scene
Despite the success of the main groups even during the 2012 edition of the festival, Summerlied is a very special time for the promotion and expression of local artists and the Alsatian dialect. These artists include René Egles, Jean-Pierre Albrecht, Robert Frank Jacobi, Jean-Marie Hummel and Liselotte Hamm, but also bands like Kansas of Elsass or Em Remes Sini Band.
The festival also organizes presentations with the dialect, such as “Wurzle” (roots) by Roland Engel in 2012.
s'Bàbbeldorf
Part of the festival is the "Bàbbeldorf", which includes several events around the "Palaverbaum" organized.
- “Der Witzbrunne” is the place of the festival dedicated to humor and dialect.
- "D'Sprochstubb" is run by the "Junge fers Alsatian" association; there you can playfully exchange ideas about the dialect.
- "D'Akadémie" is the regulars' table of the festival, where panel discussions are held.
- “L'espace Contes” (the square of fairy tales), where stories are told in various forms, in French, German or Alsatian. A yurt is set up there for the young audience.
Awards
The festival was awarded a golden pretzel by the “Institut des Arts et traditions populaires d'Alsace” (Institute for Art and Folklore in Alsace) on October 21, 2006 for its contribution to the spread of regional culture.
Cooperation partner
Cooperation partners are the Région Alsace, the General Council of the Bas-Rhin, the Office for the Language and Culture of Alsace (OLCA), and the city of Schweighouse-sur-Moder . The European Union also sponsors the festival.
