The Sumpfzypressenallee on Grillendamm is a natural monument in Brandenburg an der Havel in Brandenburg . It is an avenue that is more than 170 years old and is planted with bald cypress trees ( Taxodium distichum ) native to North America . In addition to old trees, new trees were also planted in the 21st century.

history

The Grillendamm is a street that has existed since the Middle Ages or a dam between the then independent old town and the Brandenburg Cathedral . It is located on one of the Havel islands off the cathedral island . In 1841, councilor Johann Gottfried Bröse had the first bald cypress trees planted on Grillendamm. These trees are native to North America, but like many other species, became extinct in Europe for thousands of years with the Ice Ages . Fossils were found in lignite mining areas, for example in Niederlausitz .

In 1934 the avenue was designated as a natural monument. In September 2000, four bald cypress trees were felled due to storm damage, while other trees had to be pruned. Furthermore, the cypresses were stranded in order to make the trees less susceptible to winds and to ensure the longest possible lifespan. Several young bald cypresses were also replanted in the avenue. In 2003 another tree suffered storm damage, so that it had to be felled over time. A replacement has also been planted for this tree, so that the continued existence of the natural monument appears to be assured.

Architectural monuments

In addition to the Sumpfzypressenallee natural monument, there are two buildings on Grillendamm, which are located opposite each other, Villa Tiede (house number 2) and Villa Kähne (house number 18).
