Way of life

Unlike most scops owls, the fairly common Sunda scops owl is not a distinct forest dweller, but can also be found in tree-rich gardens and plantations and even cities. It rises from the lowlands to altitudes of 2,400 meters. Their diet consists mainly of insects, sometimes small birds. The voice is a sonorous, questioning wuup wuuuop , which can be heard with increasing variations at intervals of ten to 15 seconds during long calling periods.

distribution

The nominate form O. l. lempiji inhabits the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra , Borneo , Java and Bali . On Padang comes the darker subspecies O. l. hypnodes before. O. l. kangeana on Kangean, the main island of the Kangean Islands , is smaller than the nominate form. In North Borneo, O. l. lemurum .

The Singapore Scops Owl O. l. cnephaeus from the area around Singapore was separated as a separate species Otus cnephaeus due to vocal differences . As before, however, it is still considered a subspecies of the Sunda scops owl.
