The Chinese book Sǔnpǔ ( Chinese  笋 谱 ) [German bamboo shoots manual ] is the most famous classic bamboo culture . It was written under the Northern Song Dynasty by the Buddhist monk Zànníng ( Chinese  赞 宁 ) (919–1001) and contains explanations on all aspects of bamboo shoots in the bamboo land of China. The work, written before the year 996, is an important source for the history of Chinese food and drink culture , especially vegetarian cuisine . It was published in one volume ( Chinese   , Pinyin juàn ) and comprises five sections. An early print of the work is included in the historical Chinese book series Shuōfú ( Chinese  说 郛 ), but it was also included in many other book series.

The monk Zanning became famous as a translator and historian of Buddhism. He lived in the Tiāntái Shān ( Chinese  天台山 ) mountains , later in the Língyǐn Sì ( Chinese  灵隐寺 ) monastery .

content of the book

The Sunpu is stylistically based on the book Chajing (ie the tea classic / The Book of Tea ) by Lu Yu (chin. 陆羽) (728–804). Famous species, places of origin, preparation methods, quotes from classical literature and explanations are presented. The third chapter is devoted to dietary aspects, among other things. 94 forms, characteristic features, geographical distribution and use of the bamboo shoots are described.
