Surguja (Bisrampur residence) was a princely state of British India on the Chota-Nagpur plateau and in 1901 had an area of 15,553 km² and 351,000 inhabitants. It is located in what is now the state of Chhattisgarh .
The Rajas traced their descent back to the Rajput clan of the Raksel from Palamau . In 1758 Surguja came under the suzerainty of the Marathas and was a British protectorate from 1818 to 1947 . It was under the province of Bengal , then Central Provinces, until 1905 . Raja Ramanuj Saran Singh (1917-56) was raised to Maharaja in 1918 .
The Maharaja joined the Eastern States Union in August 1947 . On January 1, 1948, this union was dissolved and Surguja was incorporated into Madhya Pradesh and thus India . On November 1, 1956, all princely states were dissolved. Since November 1, 2000, the area has belonged to the newly formed state of Chhattisgarh.
