Suri is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal .

The city is the capital of the Birbhum district . Suri has the status of a municipality . The city is divided into 18 wards (constituencies).

history

Before the British arrived in India and conquered the territory of Bengal, Suri was just a small village. The British colonists made Suri the district headquarters of Birbhum anyway, probably due to its convenient location in terms of transportation and communications. The place received the status of a municipality in 1876, when the population was still below 7,000 people.

Demographics

The population of the city is 67,864 according to the 2011 census. Suri has a gender ratio of 963 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The literacy rate was 87.0% in 2011. Almost 74% of the population are Hindus , around 26% are Muslims and less than 1% belong to another or no religion. 8.8% of the population are children under 6 years of age. Bengali is the main language in and around the city.
