Surplex GmbH , based in Düsseldorf, is a trading company dedicated to trading in used machines.

The company buys and sells used machines and industrial equipment worldwide, conducts industrial auctions and offers expert opinions and valuations.

It is one of the few companies in the former New Economy that is now in the black.

history

founding

Surplex.com AG was founded by the brothers Bruno and Florian Schick at the end of 1999 as a typical start-up company of the dotcom era. The core idea was to develop an online marketplace that should simplify trading in used machines and make the heavily segmented used machine market more transparent.

This business model attracted numerous institutional and private investors. International venture capital consortia such as the Carlyle Group or the French Vivendi Group awarded a total of around EUR 50 million. Prominent private investors such as Lars Schlecker , Lars Windhorst , Marc Schrempp and Fiat President Paolo Fresco also joined Surplex.

crisis

When the dot-com bubble burst , Surplex.com AG also fell into a serious crisis. Branches were closed, the company headquarters relocated from Berlin to Düsseldorf and most of the approximately 140 jobs were cut. In March 2003, Michael Werker, who had come to Surplex from the traditional mechanical engineering group Deutz, took over as CEO .

Consolidation

It was not until the alliance with the Old Economy that the company consolidated, which has been consistently in the black since 2004. Today, Surplex is no longer limited to virtual business processes, but also offers all real-life services relating to the recycling of used machines, for example personal advice, expert opinions and warehousing. Used machines and production systems are marketed worldwide. Surplex also conducts large industrial auctions (live and online), for example for Linde , ABB , ThyssenKrupp and Bayer .

Products

The B2B platform Surplex was already at the beginning of the business leader in the sale of used machinery and equipment and was 2001 by Forrester Research named the best platform. At its peak, the platform had 8,000 customers and 12,000 machines. Surplex was the publisher of the world's largest trade magazine for used machines and systems (.communicator). With a circulation of 45,000 and more than 100,000 readers, the magazine reached interested parties in over 100 countries.
