Surprise is a street magazine published by the Surprise association , with headquarters in Basel ( Switzerland ) and two regional offices in Bern and Zurich . The range of the magazine is at least 142,000 people.

Surprise is one of over 100 members from 34 countries in the International Network of Street Newspapers (INSP). As an independent company with a social purpose, Surprise does not work for profit and is financed without government funds. 65 percent of the income comes from the proceeds of the street magazine, the social city tours and the advertisements, 35 percent comes from donations, sponsorship and foundation money.

history

As early as 1993, Cathérine Merz, Hanspeter Gysin and Hans-Georg Heimann founded the street newspaper "Stempelkissen"  and an unemployment committee with financial support from the employment office . The “ink pad” merged in 1995 with the newspaper Kalter Kaffee, sehr hot , published by the Zurich unemployment committee, and has since been published under the name “Surprise unemployment newspaper ”.

In 1997 the project was converted into a contracting company with professional editorial staff with the establishment of the GmbH Surprise Strassenmagazin.

Association of street magazine Surprise

Surprise has been supporting socially disadvantaged people in Switzerland since 1998. With employment opportunities, offers to participate in social life and low-threshold support, Surprise opens up perspectives and specific fields of action for you. This help for self-help activates people's abilities and is therefore sustainable. Surprise sensitizes the public to social justice, promotes social diversity and provides specialist expertise.

These goals combine the offers of Surprise with each other: the street magazine , the social city tours , the street football , the street choir , the gastronomic solidarity network Café Surprise , the job and support programs SurPlus and Opportunity Workplace as well as the low-threshold social counseling and support at three locations in Basel, Bern and Zurich.

The foundation of the association

In 1998, the non-profit association Strassenmagazin Surprise was launched parallel to the GmbH . In 2012 the GmbH was liquidated and the association was renamed Verein Surprise  .

In addition to the office in Basel, Surprise opened a sales office in Zurich as early as 1998 and in 2002 a sales office in Bern (today “regional offices”). The Surprise street magazine has been published every 14 days since 2003. The other offers from Surprise have been gradually expanded since 2003:

  • 2003: Start of Surprise street football and first participation in the street football world championship, Surprise becomes a partner of the Homeless World Cup
  • 2009: Founding of the Surprise Street Choir
  • 2013: Publication of the 300th street magazine; Start of the social city tours in Basel
