Sarah Chauncey Woolsey (born January 29, 1835 in Cleveland , Ohio , † April 9, 1905 ), pseudonym Susan Coolidge , was an American children's author .

Life

Woolsey came from a wealthy New England family in Cleveland , Ohio . She spent most of her childhood in New Haven , Connecticut .

Woolsey was a nurse during the American Civil War , after which she began to write. She edited the diaries and letters of Frances Burney and the letters of Jane Austen .

Woolsey's best-known work is her girls' book What Katy Did (1872), which has been translated into several languages. The fictional Carr family is modeled on their own family.
