Susan Gluth

Susan Gluth (* 1968 in Hamburg ) is a German documentary filmmaker (camera, director) and film producer.

Life

After completing an apprenticeship as a wholesale and foreign trade clerk, Gluth learned the photographic trade in fashion and advertising photography in Hamburg and Paris. This was followed by a traineeship in the editorial office at Spiegel TV , then working as a freelance EB assistant for German television for reportage and magazine formats. From 1995 to 2003 she studied documentary film and television journalism at the University of Television and Film Munich . She has been a freelance camerawoman since 1997 and shoots films for colleagues as well as her own during her studies.

The first long documentary as a director was made in 1999 with l'amour chez TATI , which ZDF / ARTE bought and which got a place in the “Videotheque de Paris”. In 2000, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall in Germany, the film OSTWÄRTS was made under the direction of Gerd Ruge , which was shown in various 3rd programs on ARD. Gluth graduated from film school in 2003 with Nulla si sa, tutto s'immagina… secondo Fellini . In addition to Gluth, Luigi Falorni was also responsible for the camera for this project . ARTE secured the rights to this associative-experimental documentary film. In 2004 Gluth started a long-term documentary about the guitarist Dominic Miller .

In 2005 Gluth traveled to Chad and researched and shot in 4 weeks in a refugee camp along the border with Sudan. With the support of UNICEF, With the Eyes of a Refugee Child (BR) and the longer version Shadows of Fate were created . The film was produced by artdocu, Gluth was a co-producer.

Since then she has produced her own films. In 2008, Wasser und Seife ( Das kleine Fernsehspiel ) was made, which she brought to cinemas in German-speaking countries in 2009 as a self-rental and which premiered at the Hamburg Film Festival . In 2010 she resumed filming from 2004 which took her to Sun City , Arizona . This resulted in Playing Hooky-getting old is not for sissies , which won an award at the 2014 Hof Film Festival . In 2016, after 5 years of filming in Nepal and in co-production with Martin Hagemann, Urmila - for freedom ( Urmila-my memory is my power ) with the premiere in Toronto, Hot Docs. The film Will Be Died Tomorrow is due to appear in German cinemas at the end of 2017.

Gluth's films were shown at international film festivals in Berlin, Rotterdam, Toronto, Montréal, Nyon and Leipzig. The following museums showed her work: Reina Sofia / Madrid, American Natural History Museum / NYC, Haus der Kunst / Munich, Ethnographic Museum / Munich, Filmmuseum Amsterdam, Filmmuseum Potsdam , Deutsches Filmmuseum Frankfurt , Filmmuseum Munich .

Previous stops on the shooting trips have been Mexico, Guyana, Brazil, China, Israel, Bhutan, Japan, India, Nepal, Indonesia, Kenya, Korea, Namibia, Seychelles, Senegal, Chad, USA, Europe. Gluth has given courses at various German film schools (HFF Munich, Film Academy Ludwigsburg, HdM Stuttgart, Evangelical University Freiburg, University of Bayreuth), at the HFF Munich Dr. Dieter Kronzucker and Werner Schroeter assisted, accompanied the Int. Hofer Filmtage as a presenter and was on various juries for international film festivals and national film subsidies.

In 2013 the book “Films. Macherinnen. ”By Henriette Kaiser, edition text + kritik with a portrait of Gluth. In 2015 German Films published a portrait of Gluth.
