Urmila - für die Freiheit is a German documentary film by Susan Gluth from 2016. It is about the struggle of the human rights activist Urmila Chaudhary against child slavery in Nepal . The cinema release in Germany was on May 26, 2016.

content

Urmila Chaudhary from southern Nepal was sold to the capital by her parents as Kamalari , a household slave , when she was six . They were only released after twelve years. The film then follows Urmila for five years as she campaigns against the tradition of slavery and for schooling at home and abroad, alternating between politics and her own life. She wants to become a lawyer but is also confronted with her parents who led her into slavery themselves.

criticism

The reviewers of the German Film and Media Evaluation praised the film and attested it a touching and emotionally profound truthfulness:

“Urmila Chaudhary is an impressive protagonist who one likes to follow on her way. Susan Gluth accompanies them, does not ask any direct questions and does not comment. Urmila is never shown, the trauma of her memories is palpable, but is never exhibited. In addition, the film always succeeds in creating unique, honest moments in which all the despair about what has been experienced and all the hope for a better future are combined in one picture. […] Urmila - for freedom is a haunting and masterfully staged portrait of a strong, admirable, young woman. "
