Meryl Streep was presented as the jury president of the Berlinale 2016 in mid-October 2015 . This makes her the third US filmmaker in a row after James Schamus ( 2014 ) and Darren Aronofsky ( 2015 ) to take on this role. Streep is considered the best film actress of her generation and unrivaled in America. In her film career, which has now spanned five decades, she has been nominated for 19 Academy Awards, more often than any other actor, and has won the award three times so far. For Streep it is the first judge's assignment at a film festival ("Every opportunity to return to this festival is fantastic, but I look forward to the jury assignment with great joy and excitement. The responsibility is almost a little intimidating, as I've never been president of anything . [...] "), who is involved in many different ways alongside her work, for example for disarmament, aid to AIDS, the peace movement, the environment, the fight against nuclear power and poverty, and for equal rights for women in the film industry. At the Berlinale, it was in the past frequently with films as a guest and was honored several times and awards (including Berlinale Camera 1999 Best Actor Award for The Hours - from eternity to eternity 2003 Honorary Golden Bear and cinematic homage 2012).
The jury president will be assisted by several jury members who were named at the official presentation of the program on February 2, 2016:
- Lars Eidinger , German actor
- Nick James , British film critic
- Brigitte Lacombe , French photographer
- Clive Owen , British actor
- Alba Rohrwacher , Italian actress ( Shooting Star at the Berlinale 2009 )
- Małgorzata Szumowska , Polish film director ( Director Award 2015, Teddy Award 2013)

Retrospective, Berlinale Classics and Homage
Retrospectives on film history have been held at the Berlinale since 1977 in collaboration with the Deutsche Kinemathek . In 2016, under the title Germany 1966 - Cinematic Perspectives in East and West, around 20 feature and documentary films from the cinema and television of the FRG and the GDR will be shown, including so-called cellar films . The program gallery of the Deutsche Kinemathek - Museum für Film und Fernsehen is to complement the retrospective for the first time with a special exhibition with a large selection of television programs from 1966.
In addition, new restorations of film classics and rediscovered works will be added to the program in the Berlinale Classics series . In the 66th year of the Berlinale, a retrospective is dedicated to the work of Michael Ballhaus, who was awarded the Honorary Golden Bear for his life's work, as a “homage”. It includes around 130 cinema and television films, including 15 with Rainer Werner Fassbinder and seven with Martin Scorsese .
