Kaputt is an award-winning animated short film by Alexander Lahl and Volker Schlecht . The film premiered in February 2016 at the Berlin International Film Festival , where it was screened in the Berlinale Shorts short film competition .

action

Two women who - about 40 years apart - were imprisoned in GDR times for political reasons in the women's prison "Burg Hoheneck" report in the film about their imprisonment, their experiences, thoughts and needs at that time. The two women represent many who were housed in the central women's prison in the GDR and had to experience arbitrariness, violence, uncertainty, humiliation, fear, emotional injuries and loneliness. At the image level, the film consists of black and white animations and drawings in shades of gray.

Historical background

The window front of the former GDR women's prison in Hoheneck

In a hunting lodge of Elector August I, which was built on the foundations of the former Strahlburg, an official prison with associated torture chamber was housed in the tower on the "Hohen Eck", after which the entire palace is named today. In the middle of the 19th century, the royal Saxon women's breeding institution Hoheneck was set up there, which was run as the Hoheneck Castle women's prison during the GDR period . At that time, the central women's prison for political prisoners came to dubious fame. The inmates were degraded and exploited there. A number of films have already been made about the prison conditions, such as the television film Es ist nicht über by Franziska Meletzky with Anja Kling in the lead role of the former inmate Carola Weber.

production

Staff and cast

The directors were Volker Schlecht and Alexander Lahl , who wrote the script together with Max Mönch and who also produced the film together. Bad is a Berlin animation artist.

The unicato jury from MDR describes: “The decision in favor of an animated documentary film allows the filmmakers to let the protagonists speak from the protective OFF, they are anonymous and yet close and tangible. At the same time, they not only speak for themselves, they also stand for many other women. ”Nevertheless, in contrast to their time in“ Hoheneck ”, the two protagonists remained perceptible as individuals. The jury describes the pictures, as well as the music, as very reserved, which means that the women and their voices are not masked.

Gabriele Stötzer from Erfurt and Birgit Willschütz from Berlin made themselves available for interview and talked about their imprisonment at "Burg Hoheneck". An extract of these clay testimonies was interpreted abstractly in simple, sparingly animated, monochrome pictures. In addition to the conditions of detention, primarily forced labor and the utilization of the manufactured products for "export to the West" are discussed. The inmates at "Burg Hoheneck" worked in a three-shift system in stocking production.

Lahl and Schlecht were nominated for their work at the Berlin International Film Festival 2016 and were awarded at the Sundance Film Festival 2017 .

publication

Further screenings took place as part of the Bamberg Short Film Festival and at the Cologne Short Film Festival in 2016. reception

Reviews

In the reason given by the unicato jury for the award of the film in the context of the short film day Young Film in the MDR 2016 , it can be read: “Despite the serious subject, the images do not appear manipulative. The film simply dares to say: that's how it was. He believes in himself and in the audience and avoids artificial dramatization or even seizure kitsch. All too often this does not succeed in dealing with history on film. "
