action

Justin and Kate are expecting their first child. The joy is great when it turns out that their new neighbors Jon and Theresa are also expecting a child, for whom a long-cherished wish is fulfilled. The couples become friends and spend dinner together at Justin and Kate's apartment. At the end of the evening, a chain of unfortunate coincidences leads to an accident in which Theresa falls down a flight of stairs and suffers a stillbirth. In their grief, the couple blame Kate and Justin for the accident. However, they later apologize and decide to emigrate to Germany first to mourn their loss there.

Meanwhile, Kate gives birth to a boy, but with whose care she is increasingly overwhelmed. When Theresa and Jon return to their apartment, the couples speak out and Theresa supports Kate in looking after her son. However, Kate is increasingly feeling the behavior of her neighbors as strange, including watching Theresa taking photos of her baby. When the neighbors are not at home, Kate goes into the apartment with the help of a duplicate key that she still has from the previous tenant. There she finds various photos of Jon and Theresa with their son on a digital camera. She also finds a fully furnished children's room in which such photos are also set up. When Jon returns home, Kate is able to leave the apartment just in time. She tells Justin about her discovery and both confront Theresa and Jon. However, Jon, who apparently had noticed Kate's presence in the apartment earlier, has removed all traces.

Justin begins to doubt Kate's sanity, as her family has had a history of mental illness. Kate can convince him to move anyway. They find a new apartment that they can move into two days later. Until then, Kate asks Justin not to leave her alone. However, because of an urgent matter, he is called to his place of work and has to leave the apartment. Once there, however, this matter turns out to be a misunderstanding, and he receives an email from Kate in which she apologizes for everything she has done. Meanwhile, another shot shows a blonde woman from behind, who is lifting a bundle out of a stroller and tossing it into a large pond.

When Justin arrives home in a panic, he first finds Kate dead in the bathtub and later the empty stroller by the pond. There is no trace of her son. It seems as if the mentally ill Kate sank her son in the lake and then committed suicide.

However, the breakup of the film reveals that, after luring Justin away from home, Theresa and Jon first stunned Kate and then apparently put Kate in the bathtub. Jon sent the email to Justin's work computer. The blonde woman who threw the bundle in the pond was Theresa. The bundle was apparently Kate's cat. Theresa and Jon kidnapped the baby unnoticed and took it to Germany. They consider the baby to be their son from now on.
