Susan McKinley Ross is an American toy designer and game writer . She was best known for developing the game Qwirkle , which received international awards and the jury award Game of the Year 2011 in Germany.

Susan McKinley Ross was an associate and toy developer at toy retailer HeartSong and founded Idea Duck in 2002 in Petaluma , north of San Francisco, as a toy manufacturer after HeartSong moved its headquarters from Northern California to Virginia . Her first own product was a Decorate a Great Snowman Set , which has been in production since 2003. In 2006 she developed the game Qwirkle based on Scrabble as one of the first games, and published it with the American game publisher MindWare. The game was added to the Mensa Select selection list in 2007 ; after translation and publication in German-speaking countries, it was awarded the Game of the Year Award in 2011 and the German Games Award in the “Games for Families” category. She worked on other games, especially for children. In 2011, for example, the game Fly with me, little owl! ( Hoot Owl Hoot! ), She also worked on different versions of her Qwirkle concept and implemented it as a Cubes variant with laying dice and as a card game Qwirkle Cards .
