Susanna Schwager (born January 13, 1959 in Zurich ) is a Swiss writer .

Life

Susanna Schwager was born in Zurich and lived there for over half a century. She began her professional career as an editor at Diogenes Verlag . She later spent several years in Mexico , from where she wrote reports a. a. for the NZZ and the old world week. Back in Switzerland, she wrote Flesh and Blood and The Butcher's Wife , touching homages to her grandparents, who had emigrated from the Emmental to Zurich. With Ida - A Love Story , she completed the family trilogy in 2010 with the story of her paternal grandmother and her life in Hinterthurgau and as an economic refugee in Zurich. For this she was honored with the Schiller Prize of the Zürcher Kantonalbank in 2011 . She describes her works as "documentary literature", as they arise in the sense of oral history on the basis of conversations: "I do not invent anything. I choose, translate or transpose into a written form, bring into light, leave in the shade, research, compose, rhythmize and design empty spaces and transitions. " The well-known Swiss writer Urs Widmer attested to her "having created her own form of literature".

In 2007, Susanna Schwager was in the top ten of the Swiss bestseller list for almost a year with Das voll Leben - Women over eighty tell , including number 1. A year later, the follow-up to her "Comédie Humaine", Das voll Leben - Männer über was published tell eighty . In 2012 the third volume with images of life appeared, Half Life - Young Men Tell . In 2014 she researched the moving story of the first Zurich domina and AIDS helper, Freudenfrau - The story of the Zora of Zurich . In 2017 she completed the long-term project with Half a Life - Young Women Tell . All books became bestsellers.

Susanna Schwager has lived on the outskirts of Zurich since 2017.
