The Sutherland Brothers
The Sutherland Brothers were a Scottish folk rock duo, best known for the successful title Arms of Mary .
biography
The two brothers Iain Sutherland (born November 17, 1948 - November 25, 2019) and Gavin Sutherland (born October 6, 1951) began their musical careers in 1968 under the name A New Generation and released the title Smokey Blues Away . The song was placed in the UK charts in June 1968 and reached number 38. By 1972, the brothers released other singles under the name The Sutherland Brothers Band and an album of the same name.
From 1973 to 1977 the Sutherland Brothers played together with the band Quiver, which was mentioned on all releases during this time. While the singles (I Don't Want to Love You But) You Got Me Anyway , in 1973 at number 48 in the USA, and Secrets , at number 35 in England in 1976, were only medium successes, the song Arms of Mary developed in 1976 to the biggest hit of the Sutherlands. In the UK the single climbed to number 5, in Germany it was the only chart success at number 17.
Between 1977 and 1981 some singles and albums without a quiver were released. Only the song Easy Come Easy Go made it into the UK charts and reached position 50.
Gavin Sutherland had already written the song Sailing in 1972 , which became a world hit in 1975 in a version by Rod Stewart . On some reissues of the album Lifeboat , the song was already heard in 1973 in a separate version of the Sutherland Brothers.
