The Sutherland River is an approximately 70 km long tributary of Babine Lake in the central part of the Canadian province of British Columbia . It thus forms a source river of the Babine River , which drains the Babine Lake.

The Sutherland River has its origin in the north of the Nechako Plateau in the 1030  m high Sutherland Lake , 20 km south of Fraser Lake . From there it flows in a predominantly northwestern direction to the southeastern end of the Babine Lake. The Sutherland River is still a naturally left flowing water. The river forms numerous narrow meanders along its route .

The catchment area covers around 720 km². The mean discharge at the mouth is estimated to be 4 m³ / s. Much of the river's course lies within the Sutherland River Provincial Park and Protected Area .

The river was named in 1914 after Joe Sutherland, a Nautley reservation Indian who took part in the survey of the area.

Fish fauna

The river system forms an important spawning area for the salmonids found in Babine Lake, in particular sockeye salmon , Kokanee (non-anadromous form of sockeye salmon) and steelhead trout . The fish usually migrate from Babine Lake up the Sutherland River to their spawning grounds between mid-May and early June.
