The Svēte ( Lithuanian Švėtė ; German name: Schwete ) is a left tributary of the Lielupe .
The river has its source at Šiauliai (German: Schaulen ) in Lithuania and is at the town of Žagarė for two kilometers on the border with Latvia . On Latvian territory the Svēte formed a valley up to ten meters deep. Down from Augstkalne the valley becomes flatter and wider and flows through the lowlands of Zemgale . To protect against flooding, many sections were reinforced with dams. At Jelgava , clay is mined on the bank.
The largest tributaries are Tērvete, Auce, Bērze and Vilce.
Larger places on the bank are Žagarė, Gaižaiči , Augstkalne, Svēte and Jelgava.
