Svea , also Svea Volkskalender , was a yearbook that was published in the years 1844-1907 by Albert Bonniers Verlag in Stockholm .

history

The number one of Svea bore the year number 1845 and was similar to the German folk calendars (e.g. Deutscher Volkskalender by Friedrich Wilhelm Gubitz or Sächsischer Volkskalender by Karl Gustav Nieritz ) the largest and most popular yearbook that was published in Sweden in the 19th century. The editions appeared around Christmas each year. Like most folk calendars of the time, a mixture of literary debuts, poetry, travelogues, essays, cultural, historical, technical and artistic articles was published. Many well-known Swedish writers published in the Svea, e. B.

After 1900, the calendar had to fight against increasing competition. The new sheets were more impressive from an illustrative point of view, had a larger format and used new methods of reproduction. With the appearance of the 64th edition (year 1908), despite attempts to maintain the original character of the cheap folk calendar by reducing the size and price, the production of Svea had to be stopped.

Svea's greatest competitor was the Nornan calendar .
