Sven Baum (born August 12, 1980 ) is a German karateka specializing in para - karate . He starts in the discipline Kata - wheelchair . His greatest sporting successes to date include 3rd place at the 2014 Para-Karate World Championship in Bremen and the nomination for the 1996 Paralympics youth camp in Atlanta .

Career

Baum grew up with two brothers and his family in blacksmiths . In 1984 he went to the boarding school for the physically handicapped in Erfurt . A kindergarten was also integrated in this school building. In 1987 Sven Baum was slowly introduced to athletics by the committed supervisors and teachers at his school. In the following years, Baum developed and strengthened his sporting ambitions.

From 1987 to 1997 he was successful in athletics, the so-called para-athletics. His disciplines were javelin throw, shot put, 100 m sprint and 1,500 m in a wheelchair. During this time he won several Thuringian state championship titles for his club, the Handicap Sports Club Erfurt. Baum achieved his greatest success in athletics in 1996 when he won the German championship in javelin throwing, the 100 m sprint and the 400 m distance. He was also nominated for the 1996 Paralympic Youth Camp in Atlanta. Baum competed in his last athletics competition in 1997.

Due to his professional training as an office clerk, which he completed in Gera , he had to reduce his sporting goals from 1997 onwards. In Gera there was no possibility of continuing to train at competitive athletics level in athletics. From 2001 to 2003 Baum worked as a receptionist in the Sophienklinik in Bad Sulza . Sven Baum began a career training at customs in 2003 , which he successfully completed in 2005. Since then he has worked at the main customs office in Erfurt .

Para karate

With the move to Erfurt, Baum was looking for new sporting challenges. A new challenge was created with wheelchair karate. This was offered by the first karate club in Erfurt under Sensei Lothar F. Ratschke. In 2006 Baum began his second sporting career as a karateka in para-karate. Sven Baum won his first German Para-Karate championship in 2009. Since then the competitions in para-karate have grown and developed steadily. By winning the bronze medal at the Para-Karate World Championship in Bremen in 2014 , Baum achieved his best result of his sporting career to date.

Since then, Baum has tried to further develop Para-Karate in the German Karate Association and on an international level and to improve the level of performance. When he switched to his new club, Buschido Waltershausen, in 2017, the prerequisites and opportunities for a better level of performance were created. Baum's new club is also Noah Bitsch's home club . With the election as athlete spokesman for Para-Karate in the German Karate Association , Baum can do even better for the interests of the athletes.
