Sven Grünberg

Sven Grünberg (born November 24, 1956 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian composer.

life and work

Sven Grünberg graduated from the Tallinn State Music School ( Tallinna Muusikakool ) in 1976 . As a student he already played in several musical groups. In January 1974 he founded the prog band Mess with Härmo Härm , which mainly used electronic keyboard instruments and combined music with visual elements. Grünberg was the first musician in Estonia to use a synthesizer and often came into conflict with the Soviet cultural authorities. He ran the band, which was unique in what was then the Soviet Union , until it broke up in 1976.

Since his youth, Sven Grünberg has been strongly influenced by Asian sounds and instruments, especially from Tibetan music . He usually plays his works himself. His often long pieces are peaceful and meditative . You may have an inner tension, but avoid confrontational elements. Grünberg is currently one of the most famous followers of Buddhism in Estonia and director of the Estonian Buddhism Institute ( Budismi Instituut ).

Sven Grünberg currently lives and works as a freelance composer, studio musician and sound director . He is the author of numerous stage and film music, including those from "Hukkunud Alpinisti" hotell ( Hotel "Zum verunlückten Alpinisten" ), Corrida and Naksitrallid . He worked closely with the Estonian film director Olav Neuland (1947–2005).

In addition, Sven Grünberg is active as the musical director of numerous projects. Since 1993 he has also been teaching film and music education in Estonia and Finland .
