Svaneti Towers in Mestia

The Svaneti Tower ( Georgian სვანური კოშკი ) is the name given to the defense buildings that are widespread in the Georgian historical region of Svaneti (now part of the Mingrelia and Upper Svaneti region ). The oldest of these is dated to the 8th or 9th century, the newest was built in the 18th century. A Svanetian tower is on average 20 to 25 meters high and has four or five, less often six floors. The ground floor, whose walls are up to 1.5 meters wide, usually has no doors or windows. The entrance is usually at an upper floor level. The upper part of the tower is narrower than the lower and the width of the walls is reduced to 0.7–0.8 meters. The floors are connected by a wooden ladder. At the top, the tower ends in a so-called crown with a two-slope roof. The tower has loopholes on each side . The Svaneti towers are either built into residential buildings or stand free.
