Sweet Dreams, Sweetheart (also Sweet Dreams Sweetheart ) is a song by Maurice K. Jerome (music) and Ted Koehler (lyrics) that was released in 1944.
Jerome and Koehler wrote Sweet Dreams, Sweetheart for the Warner Bros. musical Hollywood Canteen (1944) directed by Delmer Daves and starring Joan Leslie , Robert Hutton and Dane Clark. Joan Leslie (dubbed Sally Sweetland ), followed by Kitty Carlisle , introduce the song in the film in the style of a soulful bedtime song , accompanied by the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra. Sweet Dreams, Sweetheart received an Oscar nomination for Best Song in 1945 .
Sweet Dreams, Sweetheart was thematically one of a series of songs in 1944/45 that played with the " emphasis on dreams" of young women who longed for their friends and husbands who were fighting in World War II. Such “dream songs” were I Dream of You, I'll Buy That Dream , My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time or What's Your Favorite Dream?
Kitty Carlisle's record recording of the song appeared on Decca 23359; Cover versions of the song were made from 1944 a. a. by Ray Noble & his Orchestra (vocals Larry Stewart; Columbia 36765), the Stan Kenton Orchestra (with band vocalist Gene Howard) and Shep Fields .
The song should not be confused with the song of the same name, Sweet Dreams, Sweetheart by Benny Davis , Milton Ager and Jesse Greer , which was written in 1939 and a. by Lawrence Welk and Jan Savitt .
