I'll Buy That Dream
I'll Buy That Dream is a song by Allie Wrubel (music) and Herb Magidson (lyrics) released in 1944.
Wrubel and Magidson wrote I'll Buy That Dream for Sing Your Way Home (1945), directed by Anthony Mann , and starring Jack Haley and Marcy McGuire . In the film, he is introduced by Anne Jeffreys and Chorus, then by Marcy McGuire and Glenn Vernon. The song received an Oscar nomination for Best Song in 1946 .
In 1944/45 I'll Buy That Dream was thematically one of a series of songs that played with the “ emphasis on dreams” of young women who longed for their friends and men who were fighting in World War II. Such “dream songs” were I Dream of You, Sweet Dreams, Sweetheart , My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time or What's Your Favorite Dream?
A first cover version of the song by the Eddie Miller Orchestra was written as early as 1944 ; from 1945 recordings of the swing orchestras of Hal McIntyre , Harry James , Duke Ellington , Woody Herman , Tommy Dorsey / Frank Sinatra , Charlie Barnet followed in the United States and Ernst Höllerhagen in Europe . In 1946 Helen Forrest and Dick Haymes recorded a duo version , accompanied by the Victor Young Orchestra (Brunswick 08637), also in England by Victor Sylvester (Columbia FB 3194) and Joe Loss ; later the song was also recorded by Guy Lombardo , Doris Day , Pat Boone , Dean Martin , Nat Pierce (1956) and Greetje Kauffeld (1999).
