John Joseph Haley (born August 10, 1898 in Boston , † June 6, 1979 in Los Angeles ) was an American actor .

Life

Haley began his career at vaudeville theaters. There he appeared as a singing and dancing comedian. In the early 1930s, Haley appeared in short comedic films ( Vitaphone ). In 1936 he starred with Shirley Temple in Poor Little Rich Girl , two years later in the film adaptation of Alexander's Ragtime Band . He achieved worldwide fame primarily through the role of the Tin Man in the classic film The Wizard of Oz (1939). Buddy Ebsen , who was supposed to play the role, got serious health problems from the tin dust in the make-up and had to give up the role.

From 1921 until his death, Haley was married to Florence McFadden. The marriage produced a son and a daughter. His son, film producer Jack Haley Jr., was married to Liza Minnelli from 1974 to 1979 . Gloria Haley published her father's biography in 1978 under the title The Heart of the Tin-Man . Jack Haley died of a heart attack in Los Angeles in June 1979 and was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City . He was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (6435 Hollywood Boulevard) in the radio category .
