Sweet Tooth is an American comic book series written and drawn by Jeff Lemire and published by the DC Comics label Vertigo . The series is described among other things as " Mad Max meets Bambi ". It takes place in a post-apocalyptic environment where human-animal hybrids exist. Although the action is set in Nebraska , the scenery was inspired by Lemire's home in Essex County .

Sweet Tooth , as a post-apocalyptic parable , was influenced by Tim Truman's Scout: War Shaman and the three-part Winterworld miniseries. Artistically, Lemire was inspired by Richard Corbens A Boy and His Dog and The Punisher: The End .

In May 2012, Lemire announced that the series would end in December of the same year with the 40th edition. The final edition appeared on January 9, 2013, with a little delay.

characters

  • Gus: A nine year old boy with antlers , he's a rare human-animal hybrid. Growing up believing in God, he decided to leave his home, the forest, and set out to discover the world his father had always warned him about. Many of the skills he has learned, such as wound treatment and the use of a twin , help him along the way. It also appears that he can see into the future, but he has no control over what he sees. The future is foretold in his nightmares. The dreams seem to move the story forward. They tell what will happen soon, such as B. the meeting with Jepperd.
  • Tommy Jepperd: A brutal, cumbersome tramp accompanies Gus and promises to take him to The Preserve (a fabulous safe place for hybrid kids). The figure is based on an older Frank Castle ( Marvel's The Punisher ). “Corbens older gray-haired Frank is an unstoppable force of nature and great to look at. That character design had a huge impact on the design of Jepperd, the big bad ass in Sweet Tooth . ”Jepperd is a gray character. It is not always clear whether he is doing good or bad. He is a retired ice hockey player and tried to be a good husband and father to his family.
  • Dr. Singh: The mad scientist “takes care” of the human-animal hybrids, similar to Doctor Moreau from HG Wells ' Die Insel des Dr. Moreau .

Story arcs

  • Out of the woods

  • In captivity
Gus meets other hybrids. He is now separated from Jepperd and sees for the first time what is being done to the hybrids and what his father always wanted to protect him from. Jepperd thinks about his life choices.
  • Animal Armies
The hybrids try to escape from the military area.
  • Endangered Species
After the escape, the group sets out for Alaska to find the reason for the plague.
  • Unnatural Habitats
The journey of Gus and his companions ends.

publication

United States

In the first year, twelve editions of Sweet Tooth should appear. Since monthly comic sales are a big factor, Jeff Lemire wasn't sure exactly how long the series would run. The main storyline for Vertigo was estimated to be about 40 issues. In an interview with USA Today , Lemire stated that he has a rough plot for 20 to 30 issues, but it could be expanded if demand is high.

The fifth edition was the end of the "Out of the Woods" story arc, which together makes up the first trade paperback.
