Swenson Red

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Swenson Red is a red grape variety that Elmer Swenson at the University of Minnesota crossed for the first time in 1962 between the clones Minnesota 78 and Seibel 11803 and was approved by the state since 1978. It is therefore considered to be the first successful vine breeding he carried out.

Swenson described his cultivated berries as "large, round to slightly ovoid and dark red". If they “stay longer on the vine, their color changes to red-blue”. Although the Swenson Red is basically a red grape variety, it can vary in color depending on the climatic conditions: In locations with cool nights, its color tends to turn bluish, but at mild night temperatures it can also develop a greenish skin. Due to these color differences, both light red wines and rosé wines as well as white wines ( Blanc de Noirs ) can be made from the vines. According to Swenson, the taste would be “full, fruity, but not 'furry' (non-labrusca)”. In the meat they are "firm and fleshy and easily edible". They were reminiscent of European table grapes , which could easily reach a high sugar content.

When ripe, the grapes are considered “medium early” and their sensitivity to frost is also described as “medium”.
