Svetloje ( Russian Светлое ) is a village in Leningrad Oblast .
The place is about 70 kilometers northwest of the center of the city of Saint Petersburg and became known as the site of an astronomical observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences . A monitoring station of the SDCM system is located on site .
Until 1944, the village belonged to the Finnish province of Viipuri and was called Valkeamatka . After the area was annexed to the Soviet Union , it was briefly renamed Bolshaya Gora in 1947 , then Svetlaja, from 1949 in the current form Svetloje. The Russian name ("bright") is based on the Finnish name (about "White Path"). Today Svetloje belongs to the rural community (selskoje posselenije) Krasnoosjornoje, whose administrative seat Krasnoosjornoje is a good 8 km northwest, and with this to the Prioserski district . Its center Priosersk is about 60 km to the north.
