Swift River in the Kuskokwim River basin |
The Swift River is a roughly 160 km long left tributary of the Kuskokwim River in southwest Alaska .
The river arises at the confluence of two glacier-fed streams 7 km west of Mount Mausolus in the southwestern Alaska range north of Lake Clark National Park . It flows westward to the confluence with the Kuskokwim River 21 km northeast of Sleetmute .
The name of the Eskimos for the river was recorded in 1842-44 by Lieutenant LA Sagoskin of the Imperial Russian Navy as "R (eka) Chagvanakhtuli". WS Post from the United States Geological Survey noted the name "Chakawunapuk" in 1898, which was published as "Chagavenapuk" by JE Spurr, also from the USGS. The name of the natives was also passed down by Zagoskin as "Khockalitno". The translation of this name, Swift River, is by AG Maddren of the USGS in 1908.
