Shapland Hugh Swinny
Shapland Hugh Swinny (born January 30, 1857 in Dublin , † August 31, 1923 in London ) was an Irish economist and a supporter of the idea of positivism of the French philosopher Auguste Comte .
Born in Dublin in 1857, the son of Captain Shapland Swiny , he studied at St. John College , Cambridge , where he graduated in 1884 with a Master of Arts .
Swinny joined the London Positivist Society and succeeded Edward Spencer Beesley as President of the London Positivist Society (1901-1923). He was also editor of the Positivist Review and chairman of the Council of the Sociological Society from 1907 to 1909, and a co-founder of the Church of Humanity , along with Philip F. Thomas . Swinny was a personal friend of several Indian nationalists, including Bal Gangadhar Tilak .
