Swiss media database

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Swiss Media Database (SMD) is a database with press articles from major newspapers and magazines as well as TV reports from Switzerland . While the SMD is only accessible to the media, the public can access the content of the SMD via swissdox.ch for a fee .

Organization and content

The SMD Schweizer Mediendatenbank AG (hereinafter SMD), based in Zurich , was founded in May 1996 and is a joint venture between the two publishing houses Ringier ( Zofingen ) and Tamedia (Zurich) and the Swiss radio and television company ; the three parties each have a third of the shares (33.33 percent). The newspapers and magazines of the publishers involved are in full text and if they are in circulation as a print product, their original newspaper page is also available as a JPG. In addition, the SMD also contains the full text of most Swiss daily and weekly newspapers and selected articles from international press publications. Print and online titles are archived.

Since the beginning of June 2019, programs on German-speaking Swiss television (SRF) and Swiss television in French (RTS) have also been indexed, with the option of accessing the respective program to the second from the indexed transcripts or subtitles. In total, the SMD contains more than 33 million documents (as of 2019). About two million are added every year.

The access to the SMD is open to editors of the participating media houses and partners. Since 2002, SMD has been providing companies and private individuals with paid access to their archives via the swissdox.ch website . Since 2019, the SMD, in cooperation with the Association of Swiss Specialized Journalists and impressum , the largest journalists' association in Switzerland, has also been offering affordable access for freelance journalists .

Deleting articles

The deletion of articles in the database is sometimes ordered by the courts or carried out by publishers of their own accord. This has also given rise to controversial discussions, for example on reporting on Jolanda Spiess-Hegglin .
