Sygic is a Slovak software manufacturer and provider of navigation programs for smartphones and tablets based in Bratislava.

With over 200 million downloads (as of 2017), Sygic sells Sygic GPS Navigation, the world's most widely used offline navigation software for smartphones.

history

Sygic was founded in 2004 by Michal Štencl, Martin Kališ and Peter Pecho. Michal Štencl has been the managing director since then. In the early phase, the company's aim was to develop reliable navigation software for as many users as possible and independent of the operating systems of the time. This peculiarity enabled Sygic to seamlessly transition to the smartphones, which appeared in 2007, and thus the publication of the first GPS navigation app. With the acquisition of the Czech startup Tripomatic in 2016 , the company expanded its profile to include travel planning and tourism.

Products

GPS navigation

Sygic's main product is the most widely used offline navigation application in the world. Sygic obtains its map material from TomTom and stores the maps in the memory of the smartphone. Your own location is compared with the map via GPS . This means that no additional internet connection is required for navigation. For this reason, the structure and design of Sygic GPS Navigation is more like a traditional navigation system. The software is free, but the range of functions is limited except for a one-week test phase and can only be expanded by purchasing a premium license. So it's a freemium model.

Additional functions for paying customers are, for example:

  • Voice control and voice guidance
  • Traffic situation service with automatic route calculation
  • Advanced preferences for navigation
  • the ability to compare gasoline prices at gas stations
  • Speed and lane departure warning
  • Dashcam

Car navigation; Truck navigation; Taxi navigation

These products are based on Sygic GPS Navigation , but have extended functionality for use in specific areas. With truck navigation, for example, drivers can define the vehicle parameters, car navigation offers car connectivity , and taxi navigation includes order planning.

Speed cameras

A dedicated application specializing in speed cameras and speed traps.

Family locator

A GPS-based location app for determining the position of family members. The app creates a comprehensive movement profile; certain areas can be marked as "dangerous" or "non-dangerous". Software of this type is the subject of controversy. Many providers explicitly advertise monitoring their own children or partners. However, the function can also be used, for example, for drug or alcohol addicts who are at risk of relapse in order to enable timely intervention. Software of this type can also be a relief for the family when dealing with people with dementia in need of care who often get lost. In any case, the data subject's right to informational self-determination must be observed.

Travel

For planning trips and excursions.

Licenses

The licenses are valid for life. They can also be transferred from old to new devices. It is also possible to activate individual functions, but at a higher price.

criticism

In 2012, the Stiftung Warentest found in a study at Sygic that the user data was not encrypted.

Trivia

In a video about Slovakia created for the satirical video competition Every Second Counts , Sygic is mentioned with the note: “It helps Mexicans navigate another country”.
