Sylvain Azougoui

Sylvain Azougoui (born October 12, 1983 in Porto-Novo , Benin ; † April 20, 2014 in Bongoville , Gabon ) was a Togolese- Benin football player.

Career

Azougoui was born in Porto-Novo , Benin in 1983 and grew up in Togo . There he started his football playing career in adolescence. His first stop was AC Merlan in Lomé . Meanwhile he studied at the Université de Lomé . When he was in his early twenties, he decided to move to Gabon and signed with the second division Racing Club de Masuku . He played for the Franceville club for eight years before it was disbanded. In spring 2011 he then joined the successor club AC Bongoville . With Bongoville he reached first place in the 2011/2012 season and rose with the club to the highest Gabonese league, the Championnat National de D1 . At AC Bongoville he was a regular goalkeeper and deputy team captain until his death.

International

In 2011 he was appointed to the national team of Benin as part of the qualification for the African Nations Cup . Since he had spent most of his childhood in Lomé and had Togolese citizenship, he would also have been eligible to play for Togo .

Azougoui suffered a cerebral haemorrhage on April 20, 2014 after a collision with his opponent Aboubacar Bakayoko from the Center Mberi Sportif, as a result of which he died on the way to the hospital.
