Sylvie Guillaume (born June 11, 1962 in Antony , Département Seine ) is a French politician of the Parti socialiste . She has been a member of the European Parliament since 2009 and was its Vice-President from 2014 to 2019.

Life

Guillaume has completed training as a medical assistant. From 1984 she worked at the Office for Health and Social Affairs of the Rhône department . From 1987 she worked as an assistant director at the Fédération Léo-Lagrange, an association for socio-cultural animation and education.

In 1988 she joined the Parti socialiste (PS). In 1998 she was elected to the Rhône-Alpes Regional Council, of which she was a member until 2009. From 2001 to 2014 she was a member of the Lyon municipal council and deputy to the mayor Gérard Collomb .

In the European elections in 2009 she was elected to the European Parliament as second in the list of the PS in the constituency of southeast France . There she belongs to the parliamentary group of the Progressive Alliance of Social Democrats (S&D), from 2012 to 2014 she was deputy group leader. Since 2009 she has been a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs . After her re-election in 2014, she was Vice-President of the EU Parliament for the legislative period until 2019. She was also a member of the Special Committee on Terrorism from 2017-18. In the 2019 European elections, she was confirmed as a MEP for another legislative period.
