Sylvie Kandé

Sylvie Kandé (born October 13, 1957 in Paris ) is a French poet and historian. She lives in New York , where she teaches African history at the State University of New York at Old Westbury (SUNY Old Westbury).

life and work

Kandé is the daughter of a Breton mother and a Senegalese father. After studying Hellenistic and African Studies in Paris, she went to New York in the late 1980s to teach Francophone literature at Stanford University . In 1992 she completed her doctoral thesis under the direction of Catherine Coquery-Vidrovitch at the University of Paris VII . Since then she has taught French and Francophone (African and Caribbean ) literature as well as African and Afro-American history at various universities in New York.

For her work as a poet she has received several prizes and awards, in particular the Prix Louise Labé (2017) and the Prix Lucienne Gracia Vincent of the Fondation Saint-John Perse (2017). Her poems have been staged for the theater several times.

She published numerous articles on African studies and literature, including on topics such as slavery. She is also active as a literary and film critic.

Kandé is a member of the PEN American Center's translation commission and has translated numerous articles, as well as poetry, into French.

Since 2017 she has been the chair of the Caraïbes de l ' Association des Écrivains de Langue Française jury .
