Synagogue in Amberg

The synagogue in Amberg ( Bavaria ) was established in 1896. The synagogue at Salzgasse 5 is a protected architectural monument .

history

The newly established Jewish community in the second half of the 19th century was able to set up a prayer room in 1881. In August 1896, two adjoining buildings, which were built in the 19th century as residential houses , were acquired, with a prayer room being built into the ground floor. The inauguration of the synagogue took place on January 12, 1897. The two-storey hipped roof building with plastered structures has a portal with a vertical gable .

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the interior of the synagogue was destroyed by SA members. The National Socialist Lord Mayor Josef Filbig had spoken to the SA men beforehand and incited them. A demolition, burning or demolition, as originally requested by the NSDAP district leader Arthur Kolb, could be talked out of the synagogue in view of the location of the synagogue in the tightly built Amberg old town, so that the building was preserved.

In 1945, the Jewish displaced persons housed in the city reestablished the Jewish community. On August 15, 1945, another service could be celebrated in the synagogue.

The facade and many rooms of the synagogue and the parish hall are (as of 2018) in need of renovation. In July 2018, Rabbi Elias Dray presented the plans for the upcoming renovation and renovation work.
