The synagogue in Künzelsau , today's district town of the Hohenlohe district in northern Baden-Württemberg , was built in 1906/07 by the Jewish community of Künzelsau and destroyed during the November pogroms in 1938 .

history

The modern Israelite community in Künzelsau was formed towards the end of the 19th century, in particular due to the influx of Jews from the neighboring village of Nagelsberg , where the Jewish community and the cantor was originally located and where the most important church services were held. after the majority of the parishioners already lived in Künzelsau. In 1903 there were only two or three Israelite parishioners left in Nagelsberg, so that in 1904 the parish decided to build a synagogue in Künzelsau, where various private rooms had already been used as a prayer hall . The synagogue was built from June 1906 according to plans by the architect and chief architect August Ganzenmüller and consecrated in August 1907. The building was erected in the Moorish style with two corner towers on the then newly laid out Kanzleistraße, which is now called Lindenstraße / Konsul-Übele-Straße . The onion hoods of the towers were clad with copper sheet. In the right corner tower was the stairwell to the women gallery on the upper floor, in the left corner tower there were toilets and cloakrooms. Between the towers a vestibule led into the actual synagogue room, on the upper floor there was a meeting room above the vestibule. The building had a footprint of around 15 × 10 meters. On the ground floor there was seating for 57 men and 14 children, the women's gallery had 69 seats.

The synagogue was set on fire in the course of the November pogroms of 1938 in the early night of November 10, 1938, one day after the main riots. Only the date of November 10th is now considered certain, the course of events and the arsonists are unclear. Soon after the fire, the city of Künzelsau had the ruins removed, and the costs were borne by the Jewish community as elsewhere. The city acquired the synagogue property in December 1939.

A memorial stele on Konsul-Uebele-Straße has been a reminder of the synagogue in Künzelsau since 1986.
