The synagogue in Öhringen , a city in the northeast of the state of Baden-Württemberg , was set up in a former inn in 1888 . The building is located at Untere Torstraße 23.

history

The Jewish community of Öhringen owned a prayer room in the Karlsvorstadt in the 19th century. In December 1888 the Jewish community bought the Gasthof Zur Sonne because the widowed owner had surprisingly lost her son and heir. The large hall of the inn had only been restored a few years earlier. The purchase price was 30,000 marks . The hall of the inn, which became a synagogue, had 60 seats for men and 52 seats in the rear area for women.

The solemn inauguration of the synagogue took place on March 29th and 30th, 1889 in the presence of the church council Moses von Wassermann and with numerous participation of the Christian population.

During the November pogrom of 1938 on November 10, the interior of the synagogue was vandalized by SA men. The entire inventory including the rituals was burned on the Schillerplatz. The synagogue building was acquired in 1939 by the city of Öhringen for 8,000 marks. During the Second World War , students from a teacher training institute and, after its closure, the bombed-out women's labor school in Stuttgart moved into the building. After that, the Öhringen Youth Hostel was housed in the building.

Today the building serves as a residential building, youth center and meeting place for foreign citizens.

A plaque with the following inscription was placed on the former synagogue building: “This building was purchased by the Jewish community in 1888 and served as a synagogue. Fanaticism and hatred led to its devastation on November 10, 1938. The Jewish community was dispersed, many of its members were deported and murdered. Citizens of the city of Öhringen want to remember and not forget. "
